Lecturer in Art History at St Andrews University

We wish to appoint a Lecturer (Pre 1750) within the School of Art History. You will be a scholar with a growing international research reputation in art or architectural history or a related field and a commitment to delivering high quality teaching within the field of art history (broadly defined).

The successful candidates will be expected to have a range of interests, to be active in research publication that strengthens or complements those in the School and to be capable of teaching the subject to undergraduate and taught postgraduate students from a wide range of backgrounds.

Candidates should hold a PhD in a cognate discipline. Excellent teaching skills and an interest in promoting knowledge exchange are essential. You should also have some familiarity with grant seeking processes in relation to research councils and other sources.

Research Assistant Position @ the Warburg

JOB: Research Assistant Position as part of the BIAS (Body & Image in Arts & Sciences) Project, The Warburg Institute, School of Advanced Study, University of London. Fixed Term (35 hours per week). Salary: £29,783 to £31,406 per annum. Job Reference: 00755.

The main aim of the Research Assistant post is to assist in the timely development of the research conducted as part of the BIAS Project. You will undertake research including data collection and analysis and lab management and will contribute to the organisation of dissemination activities (e.g. workshop and seminars) and overall assistance to the activities of the BIAS team.

The BIAS project aims at addressing timely research questions at the intersection of sciences and humanities with a particular focus on the biological mechanisms and cultural factors that shape our relations to other people in a culture powered by images. The research aims will be addressed by a range of research activities, including experimental work, seminars, workshops, conferences, and, involving a network of international research partners in humanities, philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience.

The ideal candidate must have academic qualifications (BSc, MSc in Psychology and/or Cognitive Neuroscience). He/she will have access to a newly-formed psychophysiology laboratory at the Warburg Institute, and will assist mainly with participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis and preparation of scientific publications, presentations and the digital dissemination of the key findings and activities.

The Library of Congress is seeking a catalog librarian for its Rare Materials Section, US Anglo Division, Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access Directorate. This is a full-time federal position, starting at the GS9 grade with promotion potential to GS13. The ideal candidate will possess cataloging experience and/or education as well as one or more European languages. The initial multi-year assignment of the incumbent will be to participate in completing the retrospective conversion of titles held by the Rare Book and Special Collections Division (RBSCD).

In later years, the incumbent will also catalog rare titles for the Law Library, the Prints & Photographs Division (P&P), and other special collections throughout the Library. The retrospective conversion of RBSCD holdings is incomplete and requires a revisit of manual files to insure all titles are represented in the online catalog. The successful candidate will work closely with RBSCD custodial staff and with other special and general collections catalogers as well as preservation and conservation staff. He/she will report to the Section Head of the Rare Materials Section.

The Speculum fellowship represents a significant fulfillment of one aspect of the Medieval Academy’s continuing efforts to recognize and support extraordinary medievalists in the early stages of their careers. We believe that after the fellowship tenure, the Speculum fellow will be a more experienced scholar and editor and will be an exceptionally attractive candidate for academic positions, as well as for significant publishing and editorial opportunities.

This two-year full-time post at Speculum, which will begin 1 July 2017, offers qualified individuals the opportunity to develop as scholars and editors. The term of the award is subject to the Fellow’s acceptable performance of the duties required, as determined by the Editor of Speculum.

Fellows are expected to:
* Continue to develop research program 1 day/ week.
* Assume responsibilities for a particular set of editorial tasks at Speculum. These tasks will include, but are not limited to: liaising with book review editors; contacting reviewers; checking citations for accepted articles; proofreading reviews, Brief Notices, Books Received, and Tables of Contents, and entering corrections; proofing full issues of Speculum.
* Participate in the cultural life of medieval studies in the Boston area.
* Reside in the Boston area during the fellowship period.

Eligible candidates must meet the following requirements and demonstrate the following qualifications:
* PhD in some field of medieval studies completed before the end of spring term, 2017, but no earlier than January 1, 2011

Job for Medievalists at ‘Speculum’

JOB: Editorial Assistant at Speculum.

Part-time intern position starting at the end of September to input bibliographical data and help with the book review process, including mailing books to reviewers.

The position is budgeted for 8 hours/week at $14 an hour and could be filled by an undergraduate or graduate student.

The job requires strong attention to detail and some bibliographic experience, while offering participation in the editing and production of Speculum.

Internship Full Time at the British Library

JOB: Internship for 9 months (36 hours per week over 5 days) in Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts, The British Library, St Pancras, London. Salary is £9.40 per hour. Start date in October 2016.

Thanks to external funding, the British Library is pleased to be able to offer an internship in the Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts section of the Western Heritage Department for a post-graduate or post-doctoral student in History, Art History, Medieval Language or Literature or other relevant subject.

The primary focus of the internship will be to enhance our Explore Archives and Manuscripts online catalogue, by creating catalogue entries for medieval manuscripts from the Harley collection.

In addition, the intern will be involved in all aspects of the work of the Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts section, including responding to enquiries, providing talks for students and patrons, selecting and presenting manuscripts for display in our exhibition gallery, and cataloguing, thereby gaining insight into various curatorial duties and aspects of collection care.

During the internship at the Library, the intern will enjoy privileged access to printed and manuscript research material, and will work alongside specialists with wide-ranging and varied expertise.

This internship is designed to provide an opportunity for the student to develop research skills and expertise in medieval history and manuscripts, and in presenting manuscripts to a range of audiences.

Previous interns have given feedback that they felt a valued member of the team, gained professional confidence and developed their career by carrying out a ‘real’ job with specific duties.

The programme is only open to students who are engaged actively in research towards, or have recently completed a PhD in a subject area relevant to the study of medieval manuscripts and who have a right to work in the UK full time.

The term of internship is full time (36 hours per week over 5 days) for 9 months. The salary is £9.40 per hour, which is the current London Living Wage. The internship will start in October 2016 or as soon as relevant security checks have been completed.

Interviews will be held on 16 August. The selection process may include questions about the date and origin of a particular manuscript to be shown at the interview.

BL: New Digitisation Project and Positions


JOB: New Digitisation Project and Positions in the Ancient, Medieval and Earlier Manuscripts Section, The British Library, London.

Starting this summer the British Library will collaborate with another major research library on an exciting new project to enhance access to and promote 800 pre-1200 Latin manuscripts, half of which are held by the British Library. There will be three fixed-term posts in the Ancient, Medieval and Earlier Manuscripts section of the Western Heritage department to work on this project.

The first is the post of the Project Curator, who will manage the digitisation and promotion of 400 pre-1200 manuscripts, and will manage a cataloguer, a project support officer, and in the second year, a web content curator. The project curator will be responsible for: overseeing the successful completion of the digitisation; coordinating all aspects of the project with the project partner, under the supervision of the project board; editing the catalogue records and summaries of the manuscripts; and interpreting the manuscripts using innovative and traditional means through online resources and engagement with academic and general users. This post will be for two years and nine months, and will start on 6 June, dependent on the necessary security clearances being obtained. Interviews for this position will be held on 21 April 2016.

The second position is that of the Project Cataloguer, who will be responsible for providing summary catalogue descriptions of the 400 Latin manuscripts, at a rate of one manuscript per day, together with short descriptions of each for an interpretative website. This is a two year post being on 27 June, dependent on the necessary security clearances being obtained. Interviews for this position will be held on 9 May 2016.

A further part time position will be that of the Project Officer, who will assist curators in the Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts Section with all aspects of preparation for and delivery of the digitisation project and other smaller digitisation projects, including the Southeast Asian manuscripts project. This will include arranging for delivery to the Studio, checking images and uploading manuscripts to the Library’s online catalogue, contributing to the development of learning materials, preparing blog posts, answering enquiries and a range of other curatorial duties. This position will be .7 full time equivalent, or 3 ½ days per week. This is a two year post being on 27 June, dependant on the necessary security clearances being obtained.
