The Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society
The Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (54 Boileau Road, London SW13 9BL England, contact: sue@clas.co.uk), exists to promote the study, practice and teaching of the subject in all its forms and to generate awareness and appreciation among the widest public.
The Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) is the largest and most supportive lettering society in the world. It is based in the United Kingdom and has an extensive membership in Europe as well as many other countries. Whether you are just starting out in the wonderful craft of calligraphy, have more experience, or are at the top of the profession, there is something in CLAS for you.
Becoming a member of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society has so many benefits. Each year you’ll receive five copies of The Edge, the twenty-four page colour magazine, which covers all aspects of calligraphy, with ideas for projects, examples of work, what’s going on and lots more. As a member you are welcome at our AGM in March at the British Library where we have the Art and the Letter Exhibition - where you might even see your work on show. There are lots of calligraphy things to buy, you can visit the exhibitions in the British Library itself, and then listen to the Cavendish Lecture which is about either historical manuscripts or contemporary calligraphy and lettering.
Then there’s the annual summer six-day Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society Festival of Calligraphy, the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society Manuscript Study Days, the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society Regional Meetings and much more.
Calligraphy Courses on the CLAS List mainly prepare students for CLAS graded levels of qualification the Certificate of Calligraphy and the National Diploma in Calligraphy at the three levels of Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced.
As a student of calligraphy you are assured of a good standard of calligraphy for courses taught by a tutor from the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society Approved Courses and Registered Courses. You will find details of those who teach calligraphy classes on a regular or intermittent basis when you click on one of the lists on the website. This is, though, not a nationwide list because there are simply not that many calligraphy courses being taught.
The next CLAS Annual General Meeting Day will on Saturday 12th March 2011 at The British Library Conference Centre (96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB). An application form will be available later this year.
